Chad Leat: Work Experience


Chad Leat is a retired financial professional who has a reputation for helping Citigroup take its place at the top of its industry on Wall Street. He retired as Vice Chairman of Global Banking at Citigroup in 2013, and he’s since moved on to work as an entrepreneur and philanthropist.

He lives between Paris, France, and New York in the United States, and he can often be found riding horses in his spare time. When ChadLeat began his career, he joined the Chase Manhattan Group as the Head of Syndications, Structured Sales and Loan Trading.

He kept the position from 1985 to 1997. In 1997, he joined Salomon Brothers as a Partner in High Yield Capital Markets. In 1998, Salomon Brothers became Citigroup Inc., and Mr. Leat began ascending the ranks within the company.

Chad Leat: Donations

Chad Leat is a seasoned financial professional who retired from his role as Vice Chairman of Global Banking at Citigroup in 2013. Today, he’s an active board member and philanthropist who can often be found traveling or spending time with his horses. 

He’s passionate about making the world a better place and, before beginning his career, Chad Leat graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor’s degree. This made him the first person in his family to earn a college degree.

As a University of Kansas (KU) Alumnus, as a Kansas native, Chad Leat holds the school in high regard. In 2018, he demonstrated as much by making a $1M donation to a scholarship at the school. This donation helped KU expand its aid to LGBTQ students. 

As one of the first openly gay financial leaders on Wall Street, Mr. Leat is highly-supportive of the school and of its LGBTQ students.

Chad Leat is a retired financial professional with thirty years of experience on Wall Street. He has built and led numerous profitable businesses at Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase and their predecessor companies, and he maintains a reputation as an expert among his peers. 

Mr. Leat joined Salomon Brothers in 1997 as a Partner in High Yield Capital Markets – he retired from Citigroup in 2013 as Vice Chairman of Global Investment Banking.

Now retired, Leat now devotes much of his time, insight and skill to various Boards of Directors – notably those of Norwegian Cruise Lines, TPG Pace Holdings Corp., TPG Pace Energy Holdings Corp., MidCap Financial, PLC, and J. Crew Operating Corp.

As a member of the Norwegian Cruise Lines Board of Directors, Leat serves as a member of the Compensation Committee and as Chairman of the Audit Committee. Chad Leat serves as Chairman of the Audit Committee for both the TPG Pace Holdings Corp.

Chad Leat was an investment banker with Citigroup for over 16 years – a tenure that rounded out a highly successful 30-year career on Wall Street. Initially a partner in High Yield Capital Markets with Salomon Brothers (1997),

Leat proved an invaluable asset to Citigroup throughout his time with the firm – not only as the Global Head of Loans and Leveraged Finance between 1998 and 2005, but also as co-head of Global Credit Markets (2006-2007) and as Chairman of the Global Financial Sponsors Group (2009-2013).

As the Global Head of Loans and Leveraged Finance, Leat was responsible for growing the business into one of the biggest and most successful high-yield and loan operations of its kind on Wall Street – one that would end up contributing more than $1 billion in revenue every year.

And as co-head of Global Credit Markets, Chad Leat provided leadership to more than 1,000 employees around the globe – something that included all of the company’s debt capital and credit trading market groups producing revenues of more than $3 billion a year.

Leat would serve on Citigroup’s Capital Markets Origination Committee, Fixed Income Management Committee and Investment Banking Management Committee before retiring as Citigroup Vice Chairman of Global Investment Banking in 2013.

Banker Chad A. Leat - Giving Back to the LGBTQ Community


Successful investment banker Chad Leat enjoys the opportunity to support worthwhile causes – and to capitalize on his success to make a difference when and wherever possible. 

The Retired Vice Chairman of Global Banking at Citigroup, Leat has made contributions to a number of philanthropic and civic-minded organizations over his career, including a recent $1 million donation to his alma mater, Kansas University.

It was on February 28, 2018, that Chad Leat donated the sum to the Chad A. Leat Student Scholarship, a scholarship fund first established by Leat in 2006. Leat’s $1 million donation was one of the largest gifts the KU Endowment Association has ever received for LGBTQ students.

Originally from Tonganoxie, Kansas, Leat is proud to make such a meaningful and lasting investment in KU’s LGBTQ community.
